This is a diagram explaining how "diabetes patients and family members devised a system to monitor blood-sugar levels from afar essentially hacking an FDA-approved device and uploading data to the internet." In steps 1 and 2 a transmitter sends glucose level readings from a Dexcom device to a nearby receiver. In steps 3 and 4 a smartphone (that uses Nightscout software) downloads data from the receiver then uploads that data to a server after which it is easily viewable online (via a customized website).
