An infographic that provides information about prescription drug abuse in the United States. It provides a number of statistics about prescription drug abuse including:
- The three most abused drug classes are narcotic pain killers/opioids central nervous system depressants and stimulants.
- Between 1991 and 2010 prescription stimulants use increased from 5 million to 45 million.
- 6600 people per day started non-medical use of prescription drugs in 2010.
- The CDC reported ER visits increased 111% from 144644 to 305900 for non-medical use of prescription drugs from 2004-2008.
- 35-44 year olds are largest age groups overdosing on prescription drugs
- In a report by the National Center for Health Statistics the following groups had the highest percentage of prescription drug overdoses from any drug: 13.5% Non-Hispanic Whites 11.7% Native American 10.9% Non-Hispanic Blacks.
- 40 people a day die from narcotic prescription overdose.
- Enough prescription painkillers were prescribed in 2010 to medicate every American adult around-the-clock for a month.
